How can wet socks help treat your illness? Is the wet sock treatment an old wives tale?

I thought my Naturopathic Doctor was a little out there when he suggested the Wet Sock Treatment. Until he explained the rationale behind it.
The wet sock treatment actually boosts your immune system! Since you apply cold, wet socks to your feet and then cover with dry wool socks, you body thinks it is under attack. This causes it to respond with a fever.
I was apprehensive 6 years ago when I tried it for the first time. My twins were about 8 months old. They were showing signs that they were coming down with something but they weren’t feverish. I used this method to kick their body’s natural defense systems in gear and IT WORKED. They slept well through the night and then woke up without any of the “sickness symptoms” they were displaying the previous day. Now, I also use essential oils to boost immunity and fight colds.

The fever is one of our body’s BEST defenses!

FOUR Reasons to go to bed with WET SOCKS:
  1. You are feeling under the weather.
  2. You are run down
  3. Everyone around you is getting sick.
  4. You just need a great nights sleep.
Supplies:
1 pair white cotton socks
1 pair thick wool socks
Directions:
1. Soak cotton socks completely with cold water. Be sure to wring the socks out thoroughly so they do not drip and are just damp to the touch.
2. Place wet socks on feet and cover with thick wool socks. Go directly to bed. Avoid getting chilled.
3. Keep the socks on overnight. You will find that the wet cotton socks will be dry in the morning. If they are not dry in the morning it could be a sign that your body
does not have the energy to mount an adequate response to this therapy and you should consult your ND.
Cautions:
This treatment may not be appropriate if you have a circulatory disorder, advanced diabetes, if you have certain types of cancer or in some cases of HIV and AIDS. If you wake up in the morning and the socks are still wet, please contact your ND. In the case of any preexisting chronic condition please contact your ND before using wet sock therapy.
