The pocket first gets filled with blister fluid, and continued friction or pressure disrupts the small blood vessels under the skin which causes blood to flow inside the pocket. Blood blisters usually do not need doctor’s assistance, and the fluids are usually absorbed by the body in a week or so. A blood blister can be as small as the tip of a needle to 3 centimeters in diameter. But if you experience blood blisters repeatedly, if it becomes really big, or if it doesn’t go away in a couple of weeks, you must get it checked by a dermatologist because this could either indicate infection in the blister or an acute case of auto-immune condition. Now that you know how serious a blood blister can get, you may want to know the causes so you can avoid one, as well as the natural ways to get rid of blood blisters.

What Causes a Blood Blister?

  • Ill-Fitting Shoes: The ill-fitting shoes that you wear during running are the main culprit of blood blisters. Shoes that you wear for longer durations or for heavy use (walking or running) must not be too tight of too loose. Too tight shoes will apply pressure on the bony areas and shoes too loose will apply friction on these reas, both of which can cause a blood blister .
  • Not Using Gloves: When you are performing activities like shoveling or lifting weights, which cause friction on your hands, it is advised that you wear gloves because friction can cause blood blisters.
  • Scalds Or Burns: If your skin comes in a direct contact with fire, steam, or any hot liquid, the results can be severe, ultimately leading to blood blisters on the affected area. The blister will appear after some days in case of 1st-degree burns and immediately in case of a 2nd-degree burn .
  • Sunburn: Severe cases of sunburn caused due to prolonged exposure of skin to the sun can also cause blood blisters. Sunburn is exactly like a first-degree burn, but a severe case can be more serious than that .
  • Irritants Or Chemicals: A lot of products like cosmetics, detergents, or solvents can contain chemicals that can cause irritation to the skin, leading to contact dermatitis which can blister the skin .
  • Skin Infections: Various skin fungal and viral infections like herpes, warts, or tinea  can cause irritation and cold sores on the skin. They can become blood blister in severe cases. There are more diseases which can cause blood blisters, including chicken pox, etc. All these diseases cause some damage to the tissues or hinder blood clotting, leading to blood blisters.Crushing And Pinching: As we discussed, any continuous or sudden force applied to any part of the body can damage the tissues beneath the skin, as deep as the small blood vessels. Ruptured blood vessels release blood which fills the blain along with blister fluid causing blood blister .
Avoiding the above will keep you safe from any damage to the skin, tissues, and blood vessels preventing any blisters. There can be instances where you take proper care but cannot avoid it from happening, or you may get one without knowing the cause. As we discussed that in some cases, blister appears after some time, even a couple of days. It is suggested that you seek medical attention if you notice anything unusual like increased size of the blister, pus weeping out of the blister, swelling and inflammation, suspected infection, or multiple occurrences of blisters .
NOTE: The color of your blood blister will slowly turn from red to purple or black, there is no need to worry about it. You should be concerned if it doesn’t get darker because it could be an indication of your blood not clotting which is a condition that requires immediate medical attention.

So, How To Treat A Blood Blister?

If the blister doesn’t look like it needs medical attention but you still need to treat it and make it go away before it develops into something serious and you have to seek medical help, you can use the treatment methods mentioned in this article. These treatment methods are not complex and do not require any special skill or equipment. Below is a list of useful and tested methods for treating a blood blister which you can carry out at home:

Home Remedies to get rid of Blood Blisters:

1) Ice
Ice is the best option for any kind of pain or rash. The function of ice is to reduce the inflammation by cutting the extra supply of blood to the soft tissues around the blister which prevent the pooling of blood in that area. This should be your first line of treatment for swelling happened due to any injury, bug bite, blisters, etc .
You can use a bag full of crushed ice or frozen vegetables. It is important that you use a bag because direct contact of skin with ice can be counterproductive and may induce a frostbite.
2) Povidone-iodine Or Betadine
Betadine application is the first step you must take if any injury or a blister gets prone to infection. It is an antiseptic that is used for skin disinfection in the case of any injury or a disruption of tissue because damaged skin becomes prone to infections. It is used by doctors before the surgery to disinfect the targeted area and after the surgery to remove any residue from the surgery and disinfect the area again. Betadine speeds up the process of regeneration of tissues in the affected area, reduces the pain and averts infection..
Betadine is available as an undiluted liquid and a lotion. We suggest you use the liquid as it is undiluted, so it works faster as compared to the lotion. Use a clean ear bud when applying the Betadine liquid, dip one end in the liquid and apply over the blister and the area around it and you will notice the effect immediately. This will take around 4-5 days to heal.
3) Drain It
Should you drain a blood blister or not? The answer is no in almost all cases. A blood blister, if not infected, will be absorbed by the body on its own. But if it grows to an abnormal size and looks like it is going to burst on its own, it is probably a good time to go and see a doctor and get it drained . The things you need to check before draining a blister are:
  • It has grown big and looks like it is going to burst on its own .
  • It is in a place like your foot or your back that you can’t avoid rubbing .
  • It isn’t still red in color. If it stays red, it probably means your blood isn’t clotting. See a doctor immediately as this could be a serious condition.
  • It is causing a lot of pain that is unbearable .
  • It is present on the skin on top of a joint and may break because of the movement of the joint.
People with heart diseases, human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), diabetes, or cancer are strictly advised to not drain the blister or handle it in any way. Besides, it is recommended that if people with such diseases experience a blood blister, they must seek immediate medical attention. You can drain the blister yourself only after you have made sure that it is not infected and you have made sure that you are not suffering from any of these diseases. You have to be sure that you don’t infect the area in the process. For this you will have to follow these steps:
  1. Wash your hands and the affected area with an antiseptic soap and sterilize the needle which you are going to use to prick the blister. Make sure that the needle is not rusted, and it is always suggested to use a new needle for this purpose. You need to go to the washroom for the next step.
  2. Place your hand above the wash basin poke the blister with the needle but make sure that you don’t poke it deep enough to rupture any tissues under the skin. Just puncture the top layer of the blister.
  3. Apply mild pressure to drain completely and wash the whole area nicely so that no blood or blister fluid remains. Pat the area dry around the blister and apply an antiseptic cream or liquid like betadine and place a cotton gauze on it before dressing it, to avoid any further infection. Make sure you sterilize the gauze and the dressing before using them. The dressing should be done regularly until the healing is complete.
This is how you deal with a blood blister. There could be cases where you may accidentally burst the blister while playing or shoveling. Do not worry, wash the affected area with an antiseptic soap and water and follow the same procedure from step 3 and you will be good.

The antimicrobial and antibiotic properties of neem are the reason it is used for various medical and therapeutic purposes. Fresh neem leaves work best when using topically because it is easy to make a paste out of fresh leaves.
Just grind some neem leaves with water and make a smooth paste that can be applied on the skin. Apply this paste on the blister and the area around it covering the whole area completely. Do not move until the paste dries, otherwise, you will risk the chances of it falling off. You can wash it off after it dries, but it is recommended that you keep it for as long as you can for best results.

Identify the healthiest and greenest leave and cut it off. Cut this leave in smaller pieces and remove the skin to extract the gel. Gently apply this gel on the blister and the area around it. Leave it open for some time to experience the soothing effect.
